So far in Media class, we’ve been learning about Fechin’s mark making techniques and how he manages to capture light in very subtle ways in his drawings. It’s a challenging experience no doubt to do a master copy of Fechin’s work, but it’s a challenge my classmates and I look forward to.
However, all that said, who is Nicolai Fechin? So with the wonders of internet, I did a google search and read up on the man himself. Besides his travels and experiences, I was fascinated by the fact that he designed and build his own house in the 1920s. His house still stands today and it is now the Taos Art Museum.

It’s really interesting to see how all classes are related to one another in such a cohesive way. Whether it’s figure drawing, sketchbook doodling, drawing perspective, trying to nail design, values & shapes are two things that constantly pop up.
Just understand values, how to control them and get your shapes right, and it seems like everything else will fall into place.
Also, we’ve been practicing toning in values in Light & Form class. It gets pretty therapeutic after a while just shading and kneading and shading and kneading…

It’s a Saturday afternoon and the sun is blazing
I’m sitting in front of a church and I start gazing
I take out my pencil and I start to scribble
And I pray that it won’t start to drizzle
I never noticed how beautiful the sight is
And it’s a little sad that people don’t notice
But luckily I have my sketchbook with me
So I will always remember what I see
